What is Expected of Me?

Before enrolling in accelerated courses, consider whether this type of online education is right for you. Here are key factors to keep in mind:

  • Become oriented with Canvas – MDC’s learning platform. Consider enrolling in the MDC Online orientation. This free, no-credit orientation helps you learn the system so you can focus on your coursework.
  • Get your textbooks early. Don’t wait for the first day of class. Many courses rely heavily on reading, so getting a head start is essential.
  • Be ready to make sacrifices. The pace is intense. You may need to cut back on socializing, TV, or other activities to stay on track. Remember, the sacrifice is temporary—and it’s for your future.
  • Stay current. Without fixed class times, it can be easy to fall behind. Avoid procrastination by staying disciplined, keeping up with assignments, and checking your calendar regularly.
  • Check in with the course site daily. Even if the syllabus requires only weekly check-ins, make it a habit to log in every day for announcements and discussion updates.
  • Maintain a weekly checklist. Print or create a weekly “to-do” list to track assignments and tasks.
  • Ask questions right away. Don’t wait if you’re stuck. Use course discussion boards, instructors, classmates, or support resources such as the help desk, advisors, or librarians.
  • Preview the upcoming unit. Stay aware of what’s coming up by checking new units and assignments as soon as they’re released.
  • Review your degree plan. Track your progress and celebrate milestones like finishing your first course, hitting the halfway point, or preparing for graduation.
  • Prep for the next course. Use breaks between terms to get ready for the next set of classes.
